ChatGPT Can Now Access Companies’ Data to Give Context in Conversations

OpenAI has launched a new feature called Company Knowledge for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu users, allowing the AI assistant to access and analyse information from workplace tools such as Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, and GitHub. The feature is aimed at helping employees get context-aware answers based on internal company data.

The capability is powered by a version of GPT-5 trained to draw insights from multiple connected sources and provide responses with clear citations. OpenAI said it can help teams make faster decisions by bringing together information that typically remains scattered across emails, files, and project trackers.

Once enabled, ChatGPT can search connected apps to generate answers relevant to a user’s work. For instance, it can prepare a client briefing by combining details from Slack messages, Google Docs meeting notes, and Intercom support updates. Users can also view which sources the assistant referenced, with clickable citations that open the original material.

The feature is designed to handle ambiguous queries as well. If asked about a company’s upcoming goals, ChatGPT can scan project discussions and highlight differing viewpoints or incomplete decisions. OpenAI shared that this helps provide “more balanced and comprehensive response” rather than a single definitive answer.

Company Knowledge works within existing company permissions, meaning ChatGPT only accesses what each user is already authorised to view. OpenAI also clarified that no customer data is used to train its models.

Enterprise and Edu administrators can manage access controls, group-level permissions, and audit activity through the Compliance API. All information is encrypted and protected through SSO, SCIM, and IP allowlisting.

Currently, users must manually enable Company Knowledge at the start of a conversation. OpenAI plans to integrate it with ChatGPT’s other capabilities, including browsing and image generation, in the coming months. The company has also added new connectors for tools such as Asana, GitLab Issues, and ClickUp.

With this update, OpenAI is extending ChatGPT’s role from a general-purpose assistant to one that understands workplace context, positioning it as a secure, connected hub for enterprise collaboration.
